Eco Warriors – What we’ve been up to!

Following on from our Crisp Packet Project, we are looking at different materials and what they are made of.
Our first task was to carry out a litter pick in our secret garden and see what we could find! We plan to make a list of materials found and show these in a chart to display on our newly updated Eco board We will then look at the different materials and the best way to recycle them in order to reduce our waste. 


Road Safety Officers

So far this year, the Junior Road Safety Officers have created a competition to help inspire children to think about how to stay well seen in the dark and how to cross the road safely. In this time, we also have hosted an assembly for the whole school, focusing on the importance on ‘No need to speed’ for this year Brake charity. This involved us doing an assembly via google hangouts to all of the class; getting each class to become interactive with our PowerPoint and then ask them to create their own poster to help remind parents and people in the community to slow down while driving.

We are so proud to annnounce, for the third year running, that we have achieved the Gold award for Junior Road Safety Officers awarded by Suffolk Highways. Suffolk High Sheriff, Mr Creasy,  kindly accepted an invitation to present the us with our award. He was very interested in our work and we enjoyed finding out about his role in the county too. 

It’s important to us to help look after everyone at our school; especially on the roads. We encourage you all to THINK while driving in and around our school. We must all help each other to become better road users and show the next generations the importance of road safety.

Health and Safety Committee

Fire wardens have had been doing lots of exciting things over the past year. We started the year off talking about things we would like to cover this academic year. Here are a few things we have done:

  • Produced a fire safety leaflet, we researched what a good information leaflet would need to have.
  • We over saw a fire alarm practice making sure everyone was safely out in less than three minutes and that everyone had brought their first aid, medications and the emergency procedure folder. This was the first test of our newly installed fire alarms. 
  • Checked all fire exits were clear.
  • Mrs Allen and Miss Ashford ask group to help produce a lock down policy for the school. Making a card for each class. Once we had the first draft ready, we invited Mr Kay (chair of Governors) to come and look through the policy and amend if needed. Once approved we then led an assembly to fill in all staff and pupils of the new policy.
  • Extinguishers check.
  • Emergency lights check.
  • We lead an assembly on fire safety to the whole school to help raise awareness of keeping safe at home and school. 

The fire wardens did a fire safety activity with classes, first they explained to Oak class what their job as fire wardens entails: fire drills, emergency light testing, lockdown drills, fire drills as well as safety talks. Today's assembly was Bubble Escape. We put  the children into groups and they had to crawl along a sheet whilst the fire wardens blew bubbles, this was to give the same effect as smoke. They then had to get as low as they could and get from one side of the room to the other without letting the bubbles touch them. We told the children that if they were ever in a building that was on fire (very, very unlikely) and there was lots of smoke they needed to get down as low as they can because smoke rises. Oak Class did really well and enjoyed the lesson. We did Willow and Cherry over the next couple of weeks and we will do Ash class next week. Quote of the day " Stay low, get go" Which one of the Oak Class children came up with.

Ethos group

The Ethos group is committed to promoting and embedding our school values throughout all aspects of school. Each half term we promote a value through activities around our school prayer tree.

This year so far we have encouraged members of the school community to decorate world pictures and think about how they can make a difference in the world. As a school children and staff have made thankful bead strings. Each bead on the string was threaded as a reminder for something they were thankful for. At Christmas we worked with the wider community creating stars for the church. Some of these were sent to the decorate St Andrews church in the village over the Christmas period. The whole school helped to create a poppy wreath for rememberance which we placed at the base of our school cross. We have also organised a collection for the Children in Need appeal and the Royal British Legion Poppy appeal. The school collected £145 which was shared between the two charities. 
As a group we gather regularly to arrange an assembly to inform the rest of the school what we are planning next.

We are looking to  start a bigger project to refresh out St Andrews church banner.

Sports Committee

Sports leaders held a meeting to look at their role in school and discuss what they could organise for the year ahead. It was agreed to hold half-termly challenges and they also decided to design a Sports Leader Award Certificate which could be given to pupils who got the highest score in the challenges throughout the year.

First half-termly challenge - they held a speed bounce challenge for all pupils in the school which was held at break time and lunchtimes over a week and the sport leaders took in turns to run the challenge across the week and record the results.

The challenge was adapted for Reception and Years 1/2 so they could either jump over a cone, draw a chalk line or put a skipping rope down on the playground to jump over. 

Years 3/4 and Years 5/6 used the Speed Bounce mat – everyone was timed for 1 minute to see how many jumps they could manage. The results were recorded and certificates handed out in a Sharing Assembly to the children with the highest score in each year group.

Sports Relief – children were able to come into school in their favourite sports clothes and the sports leaders organised a carousel of activities which they set-up on the playground at lunchtime for everyone to enjoy.

Daily Mile – a short questionnaire to find out what pupils thought of the daily mile was given to pupils to complete and the Sports Leaders collated the results and produced a graph showing the results.
